Biography

Wolcott, Roger, was born in Weathersfield, Conn., Nov. 1746; m., first, Mary Slater ; second, Esther Wilson. He came to Walpole in 1774, and bought the place where Philip Thomas now resides, which is known as the Wolcott place. Mr. Wolcott took his deed under the Crown of Great Britain. When he bought the place, there was standing a small hut upon it. He immediately went to work making clearings, and being an industrious pioneer, and a carpenter by trade, soon had his land under cultivation, and respectable buildings upon it. He was at work in his field the day the battle of Bennington was fought, and distinctly heard the booming of cannon. He, with many other Walpole men, was at the surrender of Burgoyne. [1]
