James was born in 1727. He was the son of Edward Wolfe and Henrietta Thompson. He passed away in 1759. Remembered chiefly for his victory over the French at the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in Canada in 1759, in which he was killed.
Wolfe Island, Ontario, was named after him in the 1790s. It was formerly known as Grande Isle until its purchase from the French in 1795 by Lieut. Patrick Langan and Captain David Alexander Grant.
