Biography

Glenn Wolford's story begins with the age disparity of his parents. His father, Samuel Grant Wolford, was born in 1871 and his mother, Emma Lorena McClure, was born in 1889. They married on or about February 24, 1906, when a marriage license was secured in Peru (Miami County), Indiana.

By 1910, the pair had moved to Viola (Fulton County), Arkansas, where three children were born. Then in late 1915 or early 1916, they returned to Indiana, residing in Fulton (Fulton County). Why there? Samuel's brother, Charles, had there married and made his home.

Samuel died of "apoplexy" on March 16, 1916. Apoplexy denotes unconsciousness or incapacity resulting from a cerebral hemorrhage or stroke. It is a medical term not used today. His death brought the weight of supporting three children to bear upon his surviving widow, with all being less than five years of age. She sought help by placing the two eldest children in foster care.

On February 8, 1957, Emma submitted a delayed birth certificate, attesting by affidavit that a son, Glenn B. Wolford, was born February 19, 1915. The certificate indicates that he was her third child.

Emma, remarried on January 31, 1918 to Frank Charles Abplanalp Sr., who had become a widower in December, 1912. He had children from his prior marriage. Their marriage vows were taken in Rochester (the Fulton County seat) where Emma was living but soon, she relocated to his home in Cicero (Tipton County), Indiana. Two sons, Leroy and Frank Abplanalp were additions to the family in 1926 and 1933, respectively.

1920 and 1930 census records indicate they stayed in Cicero but sometime in the 1930s, they acquired a residence at Letts Corner (Clay Township) in Decatur County and that is where Glenn met, and married Hettie Ellen Hogg on January 22, 1939.

Glenn and Hettie's fortunes got off to a bad start in that Hettie delivered an unnamed baby on September 19, which died just after midnight. The attending physician attributed death to 'immature gestation, 178 days." Their next child, Naomi Louise Wolford, was born in 1940. A third child, Glenn B. Wolford Jr., was born in 1942 and died of leukemia in 1947. In that his health went into steep decline in his last year, Glenn and Hettie were most likely distressed and Glenn Jr.'s death established an earmark for when life's misfortunes really began to impact negatively on their marriage.

Glenn and Hettie were still a couple according to the 1950 census and living in Cicero. After their divorce, their surviving daughter, Naomi, stayed with her mother in Decatur County. Glenn married a second cousin of Hettie's, named Wanneta Nell (Bruce) Chichester.

In that Wanneta also originated from Decatur County, she moved to the Cincinnati, Ohio locale where Glenn joined her sometime in the mid-1950s. She brought three daughters to the marriage and together they had a son, Steven Daniel Wolford, in 1957. In that setting, Glenn found the stable home life which had eluded him.

Glenn passed away on 10 Apr 1985 and was laid to rest in the Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, Ohio. His obituary was published in the Cincinnati Enquirer on 13 April 1985:
