Biography

Name: Alfred Wolford 'AJ'. [1] [2] Born 04 Feb 1897. Hurley, Buchanan, Virginia, USA. [1] [2] Died Buried in Wolford Cemetery, Wolford, Virginia. 12 Jan 1988. Wolford, Buchanan County, Virginia, USA. [1] Buried Wolford, Buchanan County, Virginia, United States of America. [1] Residence 1935 Knox, Buchanan, Virginia. [2] Marital Status: MarriedRelation to Head: Head. 1940 Knox, Buchanan, Virginia, USA. [2] Note: I asked Grandpa Alfred 'AJ' Wolford the year before his death about him being called AJ, He said that when he was young, his girlfriend would mail him a letter and his grandfather Alfred John Wolford would receive it. He said this was pretty embarrassing. So he decided to add the J to his name. Thus the name on his mail became AJ Wolford and since the age of 5 (1963) that is what I remember Grandma Angeline calling him. And when neighbors would come to the house, they would hollar 'Hey AJ, Hey Angie' as they approached to cross the wooden plank and log bridge to Wolford's Cash Store. If it was a personal visit, they usually waited til they got closer to the house to announce themselves. For what it's worth, that's what Grandpa told me around the fourth week of July 1987 after the family reunion at The Breaks. We sere sitting in his living room and he specifically stated to me that he did not have a middle name and that he was not a Junior as his Dad's name was John and that J did not stand for Junior or John. It was added so that his Grandpa would stop reading his mail. Story by Kenneth Eugene Watson. Today is Monday 12.28.20. File File: Media Format: jpg. image File: Media Format: jpg. A J Wolford. As I reflect back to my earlier post about my Grandpa AJ. I've discussed this with many relatives since my last post about AJs' name. Most think his middle name was junior.

I saw him pretty much at least once a year my whole life, except for first 4 years of the Army. He went by the name A.J. Grandma called him AJ. In public anyway. I've thought about this often since my first post. Alfred specifically told me J didn't stand for junior. Be also specifically told me he wasn't Junior. He may have been referred to as Junior to differentiate him from his Grandfather Alfred, but his name was never Junior. He was quite clear on this and the fact he specifically started using "AJ" to prevent his grandfather from receiving his mail from girlfriend. And he specifically told me that the J didn't really stand for anything as far as he was concerned. He may have been referred to as junior in certain company to differentiate between his grandfather Alfred, but he was clear on the fact that he wasn't a Jr and that may have influenced his decision to adopt the letter J, but he was quite adament that the sole purpose of adding the letter J to his name was that to ensure the Mailman delivered his Love Letters to him and not to his Grandfather. Updated on 19 Jun 2022, as I've had 2 years to think about and ask about my earlier post. I do believe a lot of people thought it stood for junior, but his Dad's name was John. Not to mention that Grandpa told me that he was specifically NOT a Junior. I also personally believe that most of my Mom's generation believed it stood for junior. AJ worked in a sawmil in the last hall of the 20s and attended Bible College through the mail, i do have some of his course work. He graduated late 20s and he became a preacher down around Grundy. When his first wife died in 36, he told me that because of his traveling ministry and doing revivals and other church needs he had to forgo the year of mourning and remarried sooner. He lived next door to his deceased wife's Parents and they weren't happy about this show of disrespect. My Mom and her brother said that they were harassed on a daily basis by the ez wifes family. My Mom said she was terrified daily being harassed as she walked by their house on the way to school and back, til she married and moved away
