HAZEL LEONARD WOMACK, nee INCE, Jan. 13, 1900 - Oct. 17, 1997 BOWLED OVER CHALLENGES Source: The Sacramento Bee, October 20, 1997, Page: B6   Pacific Rim; Northern California Hazel L. Womack Ince, who came to Northern California as a baby traveling in a covered wagon at the turn of the century, wasn't about to let any hardships get in the way of enjoying her life. Mrs. Ince, who died Saturday in a Carmichael nursing home at the age of 97, first began to lose her eyesight in her 70s. By her 80s, she was legally blind. But that didn't stop her from maintaining her home or knocking down the pins at the bowling alley. "This I ought to tell you about Hazel," said her sister-in-law, Norma Womack. "She was blind, but she bowled awfully well. She just aimed at the light at the end of the alley. She was doing that until she was well past 80." Until recent years, Mrs. Ince maintained a home in Carmichael, cooking and caring for herself. It was to be expected from the last surviving child of the 10 children of settlers Michael Green Womack and Margaret Clara Womack. Mrs. Ince's father was a gold miner and a blacksmith who prospected for gold until he was in his 80s. Mrs. Ince was the widow of Jack Ince. During the 1940s and '50s, they spent nine years traveling the United States by car, stopping from time to time as Mr. Ince earned money repairing typewriters and adding machines and Mrs. Ince took up waitressing jobs. The couple had no children. In Sacramento, Mrs. Ince dipped chocolates at a K street candy store and worked as a waitress well into her 70s. For years, she was a dining room waitress at the downtown Elks Temple. "I know she was a good waitress and she kept the customers loaded with coffee and butter, because then the tips were better," her sister-in-law said. At Mrs. Ince's request, no services will be held and internment will be private. Donations may be made in her name to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
