Distinguished Transkeian Passes
A distinguished Transkeian, in the person of Mr. Alexander Thomas Wood, of Bashee Bridge, passed away last Thursday. He was 85 years of age.
The late Mr. Wood is little known to the present generation of Transkeians, but in his younger days he was well known for his keen interest in public affairs, particularly the Transkeian Territories European Civic Association. He gave new life to that body when he became its president, holding that position and also being vice-president for many years.
The late Mr. Wood was also a keen sportsman and a stalwart of he Idutywa cricket club.
He came to the Transkei at the age of 14 and first worked for Mr. Arthur Whitfield at Cizela, and then Mr. Brookes at Ibeka. He opened up a trading store Bashee Bridge with Mr. Aaron Mills and after two years took over that station.
Mr. Wood had a stroke on the previous evening and did not recover consciousness. The funeral took place on Saturday at Idutywa and a huge number of mourners were present to pay testimony to his work on behalf of Transkeians. He leaves a wife, four daughters and two sons, to whom deepest sympathy will go out.
