Biography

Abigail Wood was born in Bradford, Mass. (probably the portion now Groveland, Mass.) 14 December 1700, the ninth child of John and Isabel (Hazen) Wood. She was admitted as a member of the First Church in Bradford 7 September 1718. Three and a half years later, on February 14 (Valentine's Day), 1722/3, she married Joseph Tenney there. Shortly after their marriage, they moved to Norwich, Connecticut, where Abigail's uncle had settled earlier and where they lived near several of Abigail's siblings.

Every extant contemporaneous record refers to her as "Abigail" (with normal spelling variations). The "Tenney Family, or the Descendants of Thomas Tenney of Rowley, Massachusetts 1638-1890," by M. J. Tenney (published in 1904), at p. 31, gives her name as "Abigail (Annie) Wood," suggesting that Annie was a nickname, but no details or sources were provided.

She and Joseph Tenney had nine children; all born in Norwich. Eight of them survived to adulthood.

No source has yet been found for Abigail’s death date and burial place. It is doubtful that she died on 4 April 1776 in Bradford. Massachusetts. She does not appear on the list of Bradford Deaths in the Massachusetts Town and Vital Records. It is more likely she died in Connecticut since all her children were born in Norwich, Connecticut and her husband died in Norwich, Connecticut in 1775. Joseph is buried in Pautipaug Cemetery in Franklin, Connecticut.[1] The author of “The Tenney family, or, The descendants of Thomas Tenney of Rowley, Massachusetts, 1638-1890” states: “I have not received the date of Mrs. Tenney’s death.” [2] No “Sons of the American Revolution Membership Applications “include a death date for Abigail Tenney either. [3] We know from the Joseph’s probate record, Abigail died after Joseph.[4] (K. O'Brien)
