Biography

  • Possible Biography*

Multiple family histories suggest that Joseph Wood (son of William and Martha) married Margaret (daughter of Jonathan and Jane) also surname Wood.

According to Hoople, et.al. in "Jonas Wood, UEL", Wood was in fact Margaret's maiden name. There is sufficient documentation in the baptismal records to indicate that the mother's maiden name was always recorded. The entry for son Jonas indicates father Joseph Wood and mother Margaret Wood. Later researchers likely made the mistake of assuming the name was not her own. [1]

Hoople cites issues with the Sumner Wood Family Index as a potential area of problem particularly in that there were two Joseph Woods in Hampstead in Rockland county, both also being blacksmiths. Further Hoople cites the Bertha Clarke history of John Wood Sr. of Newport RI listing a Joseph Wood, blacksmith moving from Dartmouth to Hempstead. (see Hoople p. 26).

From the History of Rockland County, Tappan Baptismal Records, the children are listed as: Martha, Rebecca, Joseph, Jonas, Margaret William, Jonathan, Immatie, Marie, Sarah, Elizabeth and John.

--- Margaret unknown surname married Joseph Wood, son of William Wood and Martha Earle of Portsmouth, R.I. (Joseph Wood was born on 4 Nov 1680 in Portsmouth, Newport, Rhode Island, and died in Warwick, Orange, New York, (United States).)[2]. [3]

There appears to be no source for a Margaret Wood born ABT 1678/1680 Jamaica, Long Island, Queens Co., N Y except the rootsweb internet site dated June 2010 and that site does not identify her parents.[4]

Baptism records of Joseph Wood's children apparently show her consistently as "Margaret Wood", which, according to the custom would indicate that "Wood" was her maiden name. Both "Jonas Wood, UEL" by Hoople, et.al. and "Joseph Wood, Blacksmith, of Hempstead and Kakiat" by Matthew Yavner Wood and published in The American Genealogist Vol. 49, No. 4 October 1973 agree that her maiden name is Wood--pp.243-247.. The second article also giving some evidence as to Margaret's family.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Margaret by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Margaret:

I've done a bit of cross-referencing with Margaret and her two Josephs. There are a few problems that are contributing to the disentangling of Margaret, spouses, and children.

1) There are 3 cross-over children between the three parents: Jonas, Sarah, and Jonathan. The three appear as children of Joseph Wood-2768 and Margaret. Jonas was the first child recorded and Sarah and Jonathan were added at a later date by an upload with no documentation. Curiously Jonas and Jonathan do not appear as children of Joseph Wood-7206.

Jonas Wood-3252 was merged with Jonas Wood-7061 and at that time the Wood-7061 record had no parents recorded, but both birth and dead dates and locations matched. Over the course of multiple years there were various disputes about the fathers of Jonas Wood--but never the mother, presumably because her information is incomplete?

2) The History of Rockland County baptism records show 12 children of Joseph Wood and Margaret Wood. Margaret's current record has 13 children with the two Sarahs as possible duplicates (dates are close but not exact.)

3) I know from my own line (including Jonas Wood-3252) that there were likely two Wood families that came together in New York which causes further trouble. My next step is to try to find better documentation on Joseph Wood-2768 of Rhode Island to differentiate him at least from Wood-7061 if possible.

4) an additional edit--is it possible that Joseph Wood of Rhode Island does not figure into this equation at all? I'm following a lead that suggests that Margaret is actually the Rhode Island connection, not Joseph.

Margaret Unknown-424292, the wife of Joseph Wood has two marriages to two different Joseph Wood men. This mixes all of Joseph Wood-2768 and Joseph Wood-7206's children together in their individual profiles as having multiple half-siblings. For example look at Joseph Wood-2758's son Jonas Wood-3252. I believe these are two separate Wood families that are now jumbled up because of someone not being sure of the correct Joseph husband was for Margaret so they just figured they'd put both. Can anyone say for sure which Joseph needs to be removed from Margaret Unknown-424292 without creating too much chaos on the tree? Or do we just leave both?

You may be right, Bob...Please feel free to deal with these two Josephs in any way that is supported by available records, with citations. I am no longer actively managing this profile, as time is short and I have other, more urgent areas of research.

Unknown-232601 and Wood-2763 appear to represent the same person because: Believe these are the same person, though good data is hard to find! They definitely have the same son Jonathan. I also believe that most researchers have her born on Long Island, though exact town varies.
