Research Note
Birth year of 1863 based on age of 75 listed in his obituary in 1938. Actual date of birth unknown, but was likely between 1862 - 1867. Louis was apparently orphaned and bound out as a farmhand. He first appeared with the Smith family as Lewis Wood in the NYS census of 1875, listed as age 12, then in the 1880 Federal census listed as age 13. The fact that he only "aged" one year in the five year span between the state and federal census obviously casts doubt on the reliability of the reported age.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Louis by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Louis:
Louis Wood is my roadblock ancestor. In many trees on Ancestry he is erroneously conflated with (and assigned the parents of) one of two other Lewis Wood that lived in Franklin County, but both other people are recorded in their towns with their families in the same census that Louis first appears in Chateaugay (1875 NY State) and they also appear in the 1880 Federal census (I did not check subsequent census, as appearing in their original town in two separate census contemporaneously with my Louis Wood in should be sufficient proof that they are separate individuals).
