Robert was born in Belby, Yorkshire, England, and was baptised nearby in Howden in 1824. He was the son of George and Elizabeth Wood.[1]
In 1851 Robert worked as a farm servant for the Simpson family in Sandholme, Yorkshire.[2]
On New Year's Eve 1857 Robert married Charlotte Thompson in Eastrington, Yorkshire.[3][4] They lived in Bellasize in 1861[5] and in Greenoak in 1871.[6]
