Biography

According to this source, Joseph Wood was a son of Jonas Wood (bef.1614-1660). He was born about 1650 and died about 1630. He married Eunice Jarvis.[1]

Joseph and Eunice had the following children: Joseph b.1680 Caleb 1681-1736 Amos b. 1687 Hannah b. 1692 John 1700-1764 (SOURCE: Huntington Town Records, Including Babylon, Long Island, NY: 1653-1688; Huntington (N.Y.) According to NYBGR 123:224+, this Joseph Wood, with the children listed in this profile was married to Eunice Jarvis. Because of this reliable source, I will re-add her as his spouse. Accordng to the same article, the father of this Joseph should be Jonas "Halifax"., and his mother appears to be Mary Drake

Wood-29179 and Wood-7219 appear to represent the same person because: The parents of Wood-7219 are incorrect and if corrected (which I tried to do) then these two Joseph profiles are the same man; Joseph Wood son of Jonas "Halifax" Wood and Mary Drake.

I propose that Joseph Wood b. 1645 who married Eunice Jarvis was not the son of Jeremiah Wood and Elizabeth Jarvis. I believe this Joseph Wood to belong to the Jonas 'Halifax' Wood line and not the Edmund Wood lineage. This has been incorrect information spread on the internet I suspect mainly by the website http://hausegenealogy.com/wood.html Jeremiah Wood and Elizabeth Gildersleeve did have a son Joseph b. 1652 who distinguished himself as 'cooper'. He removed to New Jersey where he married first Joanna and had at least son David . 1680 and married second, Sarah and had daughter Sarah b. 1697. I am currently administering a Ydna project for descendants of Edmund Wood and his 3 sons; Jonas, Jeremiah and Timothy and have 20 confirmed descendants and their unique Ydna fingerprint. My intent is also to find living Wood men descended from Jonas 'Halifax' Wood to take a Ydna test and find out for sure if these two families were related or not. Old historians said yes, more modern historians say no.

Thanks Bob, you got further than I did with the "Joseph Wood" tangle. The data you cite is the reason I created Wood-29179. I could not reconcile the two Joseph Woods.

I am hoping the Ydna will shed some light on the ancestry of what are clearly at least two Joseph Woods living in Suffolk County at the same time. I will take a second look at the sources before we merge these.
