On the 20th day of Nov. 1832 personally appeared in open court before the Justices of Garrard County Court now setting, Charles Woodall, a resident of Garrard Co. in the State of Kentucky aged one hundred years 3 months and 5 days who being but duly sworn according to Law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of an “Act of Congress” taken June 1832.
He states he was drafted in the County of Hanover in the State of Virginia to go to Williamsburg in the year of 1776 or 77, he does not exactly recollect the march from Hanover under the Command of Captain John Anderson he marched on as far as New Kent Church. I was then transferred to a Company commanded by Captain Dabney from thence we marched to Williamsburg. Gen. Charles Scott had the Command. Col. William Dandridge commanded the Regiment he served six months was discharged at the expiration of the time for which he was drafted the discharge which was given him has been mislaid or destroyed.
He states that in June 1779 he was again drafted and marched under the Command of Capt. Stokely Faules of Goochland Co., Virginia he is of opinion that Col. Hodge Commanded the Regiment but of this he has not positive they were stationed at Mackey’s Mill on James River not far from Norfolk he remained there 3 or 4 months he was stationed for the purpose of preventing the landing of the British - from the place (it being very sickly) the troops were marched up the river about 3 miles to a more healthy situation, and there was a Company of Light Horse commanded by Capt. Duval that passed from Mackey’s Mill to where the troops were stationed every day for the purpose of watching the maneuvers of the Enemy who were lying in the river above Norfolk - This tour was six months he was then regularly discharged but took no care of it and it is lost.
He states that in August 1781 he was drafted for six months to pursue Cornwallis to Little York but after traveling upwards to 100 miles was taken sick and directed by his commanding officer Capt. Harrip and Thomas Johnson of Louisa County to return home which he did in 20 days.
