Leon

Visitation will begin 2 p.m. Thursday with the Family receiving friends 6-8 p.m. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, June 6, 2014 at the Slade - O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon for Lorin Hull Woodard, the son of Fred and Georgia Lucille (Hull) Woodard, who was born November 27, 1917, in rural Decatur City, Iowa. He passed away on June 2, 2014, at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon, Iowa at the age of 96.

Lorin grew up on a farm northwest of Decatur City and spent many days fishing, swimming, and ice skating on the Grand River. He also rode horses to school in Decatur and to visit family in Leon.

He was married to Marie Little on November 4, 1939, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home near Decatur, and Lorin carried mail and farmed. They also owned and operated a motel and cafe that they built themselves in Lamoni, Iowa. Daughter, Sharon Kay, was born in 1945. The family moved a house, which Lorin and Marie had built, from Decatur to Leon, in 1949. The house still stands and is occupied. Daughter, Lorina Marie, was born in 1953, and in 1956, the family moved into their current home.

Lorin went on to start his own trucking business, and in the 1960's owned and operated the Decatur County Livestock Commission Company, also known as the Leon Sale Barn. He made daily trips to Kansas City, Missouri with hogs and numerous trips to Algona, Iowa hauling cattle. He also hauled livestock for local farmers, coal from the mines near Centerville, Iowa, and for many years, donated his services to haul livestock for the local 4-H clubs. On occasion he helped families move locally and across the country. He loved taking family members with him on longer trips. After trucking for over 39 years and well over a million accident free miles, he retired.

He enjoyed spending time at the local pool hall. He also spent many weekends at the bowling alley where he belonged to one of the Leon bowling leagues. After his retirement in the early 1980's, Lorin and Marie spent time traveling with family, visiting Branson, Missouri and camping in their Winnebago. He liked fishing and tinkering in his basement workshop. He was great at fixing things and always offered his time to repair items for his friends and family.

Most mornings he spent having coffee with his dear friends at area cafes and sitting at the counter of NAPA catching up on the local news. Evenings were mostly spent dining out and taking long drives with Marie.

Lorin loved being a grandpa and doted on his only grandchild, Katie. He taught her her first word and supported her all the way through college.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Fred and Georgia, and his beloved wife of 73 years, Marie. Surviving are his daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Larry Adair of Des Moines, Iowa and Lorina and Bill Cox of Leon; granddaughter, Katie Marie Cox of Overland Park, Kansas; and many other relatives, neighbors, caregivers, and friends.
