Biography

Hugh Woodbury was born, probably Somerset, England, say about 1625,[1] the son of William Woodbury and his wife Elizabeth (Patch) Woodbury.[2]

Immigration

The details of the family's immigration are not known. Of the father, Robert Charles Anderson wrote (2015), "William Woodbury of Misterton, brother of John, immigrated in 1636."[3]

At Massachusetts Bay

On 2 : 11 : 1650 [2 January 1650/1], "Hugh Woodburie" and "Humphory Woodburie" were admitted as freemen.[4][5]

He married at Salem,[6] December 1650, Mary Dixie.[7] She was born say 1634,[8] daughter of William Dixie[9][10] and his wife, Anna _____.[11] William Dixey's will, dated 21 February 1684/5 (proved June 1690), mentions his five daughters, incuding Mary Woodbury; he mentions several grandchildren, including "Dixie Woodbury."[12]

On 17 May 1652, together with Mark Lathrop and Thomas Picton, Hugh Woodbury was granted medow lying between that of Benjamin Felton and the great swamp near Wenham, to be divided equally between them.[13]

On 22 June 1652, father-in-law Wiliam Dixie, purchase land adjacent to his own property on the Bass River (now Beverly) from James Standish. Hugh Woodbury paid for half the price and the land was divided between Woodbury and Dixie. This arrangement was confirmed in a quitclaim deed of 27 July 1681.[14] Two days following, Hugh Woodbury of Bevery, mariner and wife Mary (by mark), sold the land with a dwelling house for £80 to William Haskell of Beverly, mariner.[15]

His father, William Woodbury, died in 1667.[16]

Hugh Woodbury acquired the rights to certain land at Maryland in 1669.[17]

Hugh Woodbury moved to Bristol, Bristol County, Massachusetts; by 1689, he was living there with his wife and five children.[18] See also the WikiTree page, Census of Bristol in Plymouth Colony, now in Rhode Island, 1689. He was taxed at Bristol, 6 shillings in 1695.[19]

On 21 October 1697, heirs of Hugh's brothers, Nicholas2 Woodbury and Isaac2 Woodbury, through attorneys, made an agreement to divide a tract of land known as Cippican, in Freetown and Swansea, Bristol County. Hugh Woodbury was to have one half, and the heirs were to have the balance.[20]

Hugh Woodbury died at Bristol, 17 April 1702.[21] His wife Mary survived as his widow. She died Bristol between 30 May 1705 and 6 September 1706.[22]

Estate

On 11 May 1702, widow Mary Woodbury presented the inventory of Hugh Woodbury, late of Bristol, mariner, valued at £115 1s. 6d.[23] With Nathaniel Paine and John Cary as sureties, widow Mary was appointed administratrix of the estate on 13 June 1702.[24] Two days later, she made an agreement to settle the estate by assigning the real estate to son-in-law Edward Gross, mariner of Bristol, who was to make payments to the other estate heirs, for which Paine and Bowerman posted bond on the same day.[25]

When Elizabeth Pratt, one Hugh's four then-surviving children, being the "eldest daughter," received £12 16 shillings as a distribution on 15 June 1702, objections were raised. At one point, widow Mary was called "very Antient and Crasye."[26] The other heirs felt Gross should not have been given the land, etc.

Following widow Mary's death, a revision of the 1702 settement agreement was made, dated 3 October 1706, signed by William Fulton of Bristol as attorney for Jonathan Woodbury of Bristol, mariner and guardian of Samuel and Sarah Woodbery (Jonathan's brother and sister), all three the children of Captain Samuel Woodbery, deceased, Mary Woodbery of Bristol, the widow of John Woodbury, mariner, deceased, and guardian of Nathaniel Woodbury (John's son). Joseph Pratt of Bristol, sadler, and his wife, Elizabeth; also Edward Gross of Newport, mariner, and his wife, Mary.[27]

On 21 October 1706, Joseph Pratt of Bristol, sadler, and his wife Elizabeth; Edward Gross of Newport, Rhode Island, mariner, and his wife Mary; Jonathan Woodbury of Bristol, eldest son of Capt. Samuel Woodbury of Bristol, deceased; and William Fulton of Bristol, guardian of Samuel and Sarah Woodbury, children of Capt. Woodbur, quitclaimed their interest in a dwelling house to Mary Woodbury of Bristol, the widow of Mr. John Woodbury, late of Bristol, deceased, and guardian of his son, Nathaniel Woodbury, "being the estate of Mr. Hugh Woodbury, later of Bristol, deceased, and his late widow Mary."[28]

Research Notes

Mother did not remarry. A prior version of this profile reported, "his mother remarried (2nd) John Walker on March 12, 1678/9," citing Perley's History of Salem.[32] Perley made such a claim, but that is an error in print noted by 2021 authors Dearborn and Arthaud,[33] who write, "Walker's wife was Elizabeth3 Woodbury (Humphrey2, John1), as proven by the 1689 will of Humphrey's wife, Elizabeth (Hunter) Woodbury (Essex County Probate, File 20288."

Probably born England. Betsey Warren Davis (1903) sets Hugh's birth at about 1630 at Salem (Beverly)[34] This must have presumed a much earlier immigration for the family.

New England Marriages prior to 1700. Works consulted as "Salem 1:412; Dawes-Gates 2:834; Mosely (1878) 23; Warren (,5) 114, 120; EIHC 4:238, 37:178; Stone Anc. (1930) 29; MD 25:120."[35]

Have reorganized some of the narrative in preparatory work to integrate information from David Curtis Dearborn and John Bradley Arthaud, "William^1 Woodbury of Salem and Beverly, Massachusetts," New England Historical and Genealogical Register, 175 (2021):207-222.

Current profile has some location conflicts (Bristol, Massachusetts, vs Bristol, Rhode Island). Will work to resolve those conflicts. Will also work to eliminate some of the span tags.

If collaborators are aware of other conflicts or additional reliable sources that should be included in the update, please post.

Thank you for supporting WikiTree.--Gene
