Sherman is the son of John R and Mary E (Dell) Wooden. He married Bertha Green of Alabama. Among their children are:

The family was first in Lima, Allen County, Ohio then moved to Pee Pee, Pike, Ohio where Sherman registered for the draft. By 1930, they were in Dayton, Montgomery County, Ohio.
