John Woodham, Esq. of the city of Winchester, assumed the surname of Kingsmill after his marriage to Eliza Katherine Kingsmill, d. & h. of Sir Robert Kingsmill, Bart. of Sydmonton House in Southants. He received his royal license to use the surname and its arms on 08 June 1824 at Whitehall.[1]
Sir John Kingsmill of Hermitage Park, Dublin.[2]
Following the death of Major Sir Robert Brice Kingsmill, 2nd Baronet and nephew of Admiral Sir Robert Kingsmill, the Baronetcy expired. John Woodham became Sir John Kingsmill on marriage to Eliza Katherine Kingsmill, the only surviving heir of her father (the 2nd Baronet). In various petitions and memorials Admiral Kingsmill's distinguished naval career and achievements are documented. Sir John also claims that the Admiral is posthumously owed prize money of £50,000. Sir John petitions the Crown to confer on him the title of Baronet as the Admiral's only surviving successor (with his wife) in honour of the Admiral's services to the nation and in view of the money owed to him. Sir John's claim is strengthened in 1831-1832 by the abolition of the Battle Axe Guards in Dublin, Ireland, resulting in the loss of 'rank, situation and advantages'.[3]
