Mary Wells Woodhams was born on 6 September 1835 in Chesham, Buckinghamshire, and baptised there on 18 November 1835, the daughter of James Woodhams and Sarah Wells[1]
In 1841 James and his family were living in Brick Kiln Farm, Amersham, Buckinghamshire:
Sometime after 1844 and before 1850, James and his family emigrated to the United States, and by the time the census was taken in that year, they had settled in Cuyahoga, Ohio, the census entry having been transcribed as Woodhouse rather than Woodhams:
