Biography

Hannah was the daughter of John and Sara (Ogden) Woodruff.[1]

Hannah has been said to have married Benjamin Ogden, but but that is not possible since she was his niece some argue (Mary Ogden, his sister, married John Woodruff “The Elder” or III). Further confounding the claim of Hannah as his wife is that his will names a Woodruff relation, but as “nephew,” rather than brother-in-law.

Arguments can, of course, be made as to Benjamin being her spouse. The Woodruffs and the Ogdens were neighbors in both Southampton, Long Island and Elizabethtown. Intermarrying between neighbors and first degree relatives was common both in the new colony and in Europe, particularly among the wealthy and royalty. Finally, the Joseph Woodruff mentioned in his will, should Hannah Woodruff be his wife, would be both nephew (son of his sister, Mary) and his brother-in-law, so he could have identified him as his blood relation rather than his tie through marriage.

Hannah was named as a child in her father's will ...1691. April 27. Woodruff, John, Sr.. of Elizabeth Town. [2]

Beryl, I’ve seen Sarah referred to as Sarah, Mary, and Sarah Mary. Living here next to E-town, I’ve come across a great deal of sources. All indicate Sarah as wife of John, with the children wheeler mentions on p50 of his partially trustable Ogden genealogy.

Valeri, I'm trying to use DNA matching to find the surname for my ancestor Hannah b abt. 1680, wife of Ephraim Clarke.

Do you say you live near Elizabethtown? Do you think you will update this profile to show this Hannah's husband as a John Ogden?

Marriage to Benjamin Ogden is impossible. As already noted, he was her uncle. She needs to be removed as his wife, and as mother of Benjamin Jr., John and William. See Note.

Her birth date may be wrong. Daughter Phebe had birth if 1771? One of them is wrong.

She married her Uncle? Both Benjamin and her Mother have the same Parents.
Ogden-982 and Woodruff-791 do not represent the same person because: One is the mother of the other. There was an error in birth dates that has now been corrected.
