ELLEN Woods was born in 1857 in Tennessee, USA as the fourth child of JAMES Sylvester "Selvy" Wood and CYNTHIA Maynard. ^[1] She had six siblings, namely: Mary Elizabeth, Sully Ann, Nancy C, Ollive, Hannah, and James S. When she was 20, she married ROBERT Henry Clay Russell, son of JOHN N Russell and SARAH Petty, on 21 Mar 1877 in Benton, Tennessee, USA. ^[2]After Robert Russell died, she married William Holson Matlock^[3] The family name has been spelled both Wood and Woods. Ellen's marriage record has her name listed as Woods.
