WEST PALM BEACH – A 63-year-old man died Friday, a week after his gas-powered bicycle struck a car as he crossed Military Trail in suburban West Palm Beach, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said.
Jesse Vernon Woods was southbound on Military's west sidewalk south of Okeechobee Boulevard just after 4 p.m. Dec. 11 when he began to cross the road at a spot near Vilma Lane that had neither a crosswalk or a crossing area, PBSO said in a report released Monday.
The move took Woods into the path of a southbound 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis, whose front section struck him and threw him from the bicycle and onto the roadway’s median, the report said.
The bike continued south and struck a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu, PBSO said.
Paramedics took Woods, who lived a block from the crash site, to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where he died early Friday.
Neither the drive of the Mercury or the Chevrolet sustained injuries, and the PBSO report did not indicate that either faces charges in the crash.
