Esther Woods was born in about 1810 in Burtonwood, Lancashire. She was the daughter of James and Elizabeth Woods. She was christened on 4 Nov 1810 at St Michael's Church in Burtonwood. Her father's occupation was recorded as farmer, and the family's address as Burtonwood.
Esther married George Holden on 17 May 1835 at Farnworth Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire. Both were of the local parish, and neither had been married before. The witnesses were James Nicholas Woods and Elizabeth Maddinson.
By June 6th 1841, they were living in Schooles Lane, Eccleston, Lancashire. George was an agricultural labourer. They don't appear to have had children.
By March 30th 1851, they were living in Sutton, Lancashire. George was a provision dealer. They still had no children, but Esther's sister Ellen Woods was living with them, and working as an assistant, presumably in the provision shop. They also had a 19-year-old house servant, Margaret Winstanley.
