Biography

Frances Mary Bates Butler's father was thought to be George Woods of Charlottesville, VA and her mother was Belia Bates Woods. But research is showing that George's brother, Sampson Lockhart Woods was her father who married Abigail (Abby) Delia (not Belia) Bates (1824-1854) from Vermont. As per family notes by her daughter, Frances left a girls boarding school and married Rev William Camp Butler when she was 17. It is likely, that after Abby died, Sampson asked his brother George to be Frances' guardian. Frances died at the age of 73 from pneumonia in Norfolk, VA. More research to follow.
