Biography

Margaret Woods was born on 1 Jan 1819. She was the daughter of Henry Woods and Elizabeth (Derbyshire) Woods. She was christened on 31 Jan 1819 at All Saints Church in Wigan, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as labourer, and the family's address as Pemberton.

Margaret married Josiah Barton on 24 Jun 1838 at Haigh Church in the parish of Wigan, Lancashire. Neither had been married before; Josiah was an engineer of full age (21 or more) living in Winstanley, Margaret was under age and living in Pemberton. Their fathers were named as William Barton (mechanic) and Henry Woods (occupation not stated). The witnesses were William Woods and William Hilton.

Their daughter Elizabeth was born on 3 Jun 1839 in Pemberton, Lancashire. She was christened on 20 Oct 1839 at the church of St John the Divine, Pemberton, Lancashire. Her father's occupation was recorded as engineer, and the family's address as Pemberton.

By June 6th 1841, they were living in Barrows Court, Eccleston, Lancashire; Josiah was a mechanic.

On the night of March 30th 1851, Margaret was a visitor in the household of Richard and Jane Greenall in Billinge Lane, Upholland. Josiah's whereabouts are unknown; their eldest daughter Elizabeth (aged 11) seems to have been babysitting the younger children, as there is no adult listed in the household, but the neighbours may have been keeping an eye on them.

Margaret passed away on 24 Mar 1854. She was buried on 26 Mar 1854 at the church of St Thomas the Martyr in Upholland, Lancashire. Her age was recorded as 34, and her address as St Helens.
