Biography

John Woodward, of East Bradford, Chester Co., Pennsylvania; son of Richard Woodward and Mary Nayle, was born approximately 6th mth, 3rd of 1708[1]

John married (1) Ann Pyle, daughter of William and Olive Pyle of Thornbury, on May 28 1729, at the Concord Meeting, Chester County,Pennsylvania[2][3]

"He inherited from his Grandfather Henry Nayle considerable land in Thornbury, where he settled"[4]According to the published genealogy for the Woodward family of Chester County, Pennsylvania; he had 7 children.

Ann is mentioned in her fathers will dated Feb 5, 1733; and proved January 22, 1734/5, A.428: "To daughter Ann wife of John Woodward 40 lbs"[5]

John is mentioned in his fathers will dated October 9, 1747; along with his brothers: Henry, Richard, Thomas, and sisters: Deborah Bennett, Mary Strode and Alice Ash; and several grandchildren

Abstract of Richard Woodward of East Bradford's Will-Father to John

Will of Richard Woodward of East Bradford, in the County of Chester, in the Province of Pennsylvania, Yeoman. Bequeathes the following:

  • Unto my Son Henry Woodward, 20 shillings, and set of books
  • Unto my son John Woodward, 20 shillings,
  • Unto my son Richard Woodward, 30 pounds
  • Unto my son Thomas, 5 shillings
  • Unto my Daughter Deborah Bennett, 20 shillings
  • Unto my Daughter Mary Strode, 20 shillings
  • Unto my Daughter Alice Ash, five pounds
  • Grandson Henry Woodward, son of Henry Woodward, 5 pounds *Grandson Richard Woodward, son of John Woodwaord, 5 pounds *Grandson Richard Strode, 5 pounds
  • Granddaughter Mary Bennett, 3 pounds

Remaining estate to wife Mary Woodward (if she should marry again, she is to pay to 6 children (Henry, Richard, Thomas, Deborah, Mary, Alice) one hundred pounds; divided amongst them after intermarriage).

Appoints his wife to be his sole executor, dated 9th of October, 1747. [6][7]

Ann (Pyle) Woodward died after the birth of her 7th child Ann, born in 1746 but before the birth of Johns 2nd wife's first child Mary, in 1750[8]

John married (2) Hannah Brinton, born about 1717 in Thornbury[citation needed], widow of John, and daughter of Jacob and Ann Vernon, of Thornbury; They had four children[9]

Hannah died before 1763 (Year John married his 3rd wife)

John married (3) Hannah Martin, widow of John, and daughter of William Dilworth, 3rd month, 16th, 1763; at the Birmingham Meeting; she died 7th month, 17th 1814, age 88 yrs old; they had 2 children[10]

  • Nayle, born 5th month 10th, 1731, married Lydia Brinton 5th month 9th, 1754. He was a farmer and lived near Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. He died 1769, leaving two sons.
  • Hannah, born 2d month 18th, 1733, married John Dilworth 12th month 8th, 1749.
  • John, born 11th month 26th, 1735, married ———.
  • Richard, born 10th month 8th, 1737, married Hannah Taylor (?).
  • Amos, born 12th month 27th, 1739.
  • Henry, born 11th month 3d, 1744, married Rachel White.
  • Ann, born 12th month 7th, 1746.

Children of John Woodward and Hannah Vernon aka Brinton

  • Mary, born 10th month 4th, 1750, married Frederick Steen.

*Sarah, born 9th month 13th, 1751, married John Nield and Henry Pealon. * Phebe, born 4th month 21st, 1753.

  • Betty, born 2d month 5th, 1755.

  • Thomas, born December 19th, 1763, died November 1st, 1843, married Tacy Davis.
