As an executor of Richard Butler's Will, in 1857 he was defendant in a case brought by one of his brothers in law, Joseph Butler.[4][5]
Joseph Butler v. George Butler and Samuel Woodward: In this case, Mr. Motteram, barrister, appeared for the plaintiff, a turner at Messrs. Izon's works, and Mr. Motteram for the defendants, who reside West Bromwich. It was an action to recover the sum of £5 10s., as half a year's interest upon a sum of £220, to which the plaintiff, as alleged, was entitled, as one of the legatees under the will of his late father, Richard Butler, the defendants having been appointed trustees under that will. Mr. Motteram said that the sum of £220 was the sum arrived at on the settlement of accounts, when a lease was executed to the trustees on this footing. It was stated that the plaintiff had received the interest for several years. Mr. Bayley, besides objecting to the Court’s jurisdiction, said that the main defence was that the account referred to by Mr. Motteram was an erroneous one. It was said that the difference between the parties involved only very small sum. On his Honour’s suggestion, the matter was ultimately adjourned.
There were several planning applications lodged with the council from Samuel at his Bull Street address in 1859, so building work must have been quite busy.[6][7]
In the 1861 census Samuel (age 54) was with his 3 children in Bull Street, West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England.[8]

In the 1871 census Samuel (age 64) was with his 2 daughters, Sarah and Comfort, both single, and noted as being out of employ, perhaps winding down for retirement, now living in Queen Street in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England.[9] By the 1881 census Samuel (age 74), Retired Builder, was still in Queen Street with his 2 daughters at 27 Queen St, West Bromwich, Staffordshire, England.[10]
Samuel's death (age 80) was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1888 in the West Bromwich district.[11]
