"REMARKABLE LONGEVITY. Last week Saturday, the oldest resident of Danville deceased, at the poor farm, viz, Mr Darius Woodward. He was born at Smithfield, Rhode Island, Nov. 1776 -- the year of the Declaration of American Independence -- which would make him at the time of his death 97 years old. He had been a resident of this town for some forty five or fifty years. He also resided in Peacham for a time, coming to that place when it was almost an unbroken wilderness, and when there was but three houses in town. He had a childish recollection of the "dark day," (so called) which occurred in 1780 -- Mr Woodward's life has not been a very eventful one. He was a plain, practical, hard working farmer. The last few years prior to his death his health and strength failed him so that he was unable to labor, and he was provided for by the town authorities." N.B., the "dark day" [19 May 1780 per "Sandwich, A Cape Cod Town"] was a famous meteorological phenomenon which affected much of New England one particular day in 1780, particularly Rhode Island.
