Richard Woodward Jr., was born March 1, 1670, most likely in Cheshire, England.[2][3]
Richard obtained from his father, Dec 10, 1698, 130 acres of land in Thornbury, Chester County, Pennsylvania, and afterward purchased from Jacob Simcock, son of John Simcock, 100 acres more by deed of September 9th, 1708. He also bought 10 acres and one hundred and thirty perches from Philip Taylor, who had bought of Edward Woodward.[4]
Richard was a member of the Grand Jury at a court held September 27th, 1709, and appears to have been an active member of the society of friends, as well as a useful citizen.[4]
By deed of lease and release, dated May 23rd and 24th, 1724, he and his wife Deborah conveyed 222 acres and one hundred and thirty perches of land in Thornbury to George Townsend, of Oyster Bay Long Island; and by deed of June 3rd 1724, he obtained one thousand acres in what is now West Bradford township, the south and east borders of the tract now forming part of the south and east lines of the township; it therefore forms the southeast corner of said township. This tract was patented, Dec 8th, 1690, to Daniel Smith of Marlborough, in Wiltshire, England, from whom it descended to his grandson, John Smith, son of Daniel Smith, Jr.,[4]
A 2nd purchase of land was made by the same parties, and with this, Richard and his wife obtained a certificate from Monthly Meeting of Concord to that of Newark. They became members of the Bradford Monthly Meeting which was then a branch of Newark (now Kennett).[5]
Richard Woodward was married four times. His first wife was Esther Davis, and their marriage intention was recorded at the Concord Monthly Meeting, on May 13, 1695 in Delaware County, Pennsylvania.[6][7] She died before 1701, year of Richards 2nd marriage
Richard married 2nd Deborah Stanfield, in 1701, daughter of Francis and Grace Stanfield, who came from Garten, in Cheshire, on the Endeavour, of London, arriving 7th month 29th, 1683[8] at the Concord Monthly Meeting, Chester Co., Pa.[9][10] She died before 1739, the date Richard obtained a certificate for intention to marry his 3rd wife Susanna Cureton[11]
According to his will:
3rd marriage: Richard obtained a certificate to Newark, 8th month 18th, 1739, to marry Susanna Cureton, of New Castle county, Delaware, a widow. The marriage, however, was accomplished at Bradford meeting, 9th month 29th, 1739. Susanna procured a certificate to Bradford, dated 12th month 2d, 1739, and was appointed an overseer for Bradford meeting, 8th month 16th, 1740, in the place of Mary Marshall. She was a very active member while she lived. Her death occurred between 9th month 19th, 1741, and 2d month 15th, 1742.
Richard married 3rd Susanna Cureton, September 27, 1739 in Chester County, Pa., at the Bradford Monthly Meeting.[13]
Richard's fourth and last marriage was on the 30th of the 9th month, 1743/4 at the Kennett meeting, to Martha, widow of John Heald, of Kennett. She took a certificate of membership to Bradford, dated 12th month 4th, 1743-4.[14]
On Sept 15, 1743 a Certificate of Removal from the Bradford Monthly Meeting was filed for Richard Woodward and Martha Heald.[13]
