son of Alsop and Katherine "Howell" Woodward. Served in five wars: the Spanish-America War, Phiippine-American War, the Chinese Boxer Rebellion, and both World Wars. A staunch promoter of an advanced Navy, he influenced priorities and policies concerning the upgrading and construction of modern naval warships. He was awarded the Navy Cross for distinquished services in the line of his profession as executive officer of the U.S.S. New York of the Sixth Division, Battleship Fleet. He was married to Charlotte Linne Woodward, January 6, 1886 to January 18, 1957
