Saran died in 1900 leaving Chauncey with the children to raise. In the early years of the century, raising children was not an easy job for a man, so he might have been looking around for a wife to help with the children
He married Phebe Price on November 15, 1903 when he was 59 years of age. It was a second marriage for him

It was a sad, sad day when his namesake died in 1908 at the age of four from meningitis
