Research Notes

Regarding death date:

This death date contradicts the various sources listed in "History of Descendants of Henry Woodward of Dorchester" for Henry, father of many of the children listed above. Sources referred to in the genealogy include many deed transactions in the 1750's among this exact family group, as well as Henry's Will written in 1752, probated 1762. A different Will, that of Mercy Woodward written in 1759 claims her second husband, Henry Woodward, approved her distributions to her children from her first marriage. Mercy's well-worn grave stone's text recorded about 1935 as part of the Charles Hale Cemetery transcription project refers to her as Mercy former wife of Joseph & 2nd wife of Lieut. Henry Woodward (she died Apr. 26, 1761, age 82). Link below. Looking at the modern state of the stone, one see's Joseph was actually "Capt Joseph". The Woodward Genealogy tentatively refers to this s tone memorial as well, but seems to read it as May/Mary being the 3rd wife of Lt. Henry Woodward. All this makes a strong case that Mercy Badcock Swetland should be reconnected to Henry Woodward of this profile as a later spouse and that Henry died sometime closer to the probating of his Will in 1762, but after consenting to the 1759 Will of his second wife. His son Henry Jr. can be rules out as Mercy's spouse as he was killed before 1759. (please amend this note should the information be integrated into his profile)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Henry by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Henry:

R Adams,

Thank you for your interest in the Woodward family. While I agree that a Henry Woodward married May/Mary or Mercy Babcock Sweatland and signed her 1759 will, as her 2nd or 3rd husband, I am not certain that he is the same Henry Woodward who married Hannah Woodward on March 17, 1703 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut.

Family Search shows Hannah's date of death as: Hannah Burrows (LZP3-RXN) in 1772. This has also been recorded as her date of death in the family trees of her children on Family Search.

In addition, Geneanet Community Trees Index (data-base online) Lehi, Utah, USA gives Hannah's date of death as March 5, 1772 in Lebanon, New London, Connecticut and her burial as March 1772 in Wightman Burial Ground in Groton, Connecticut.

Since Henry's wife was still alive after the will you mention was signed, I believe that it is unlikely that our Henry Woodward is the one who signed it.

The unsourced death dates are unconvincing in relation to all the other evidence.

What I mean by unsourced:

The link to the family search profile yields has no valid source for the asserted death dates of Hannah or Henry. The Geneanet Community Trees Index is an aggregation of pedigree charts also lacking sourcing, so there is no way to evaluate the level of accuracy of the index. It seems your assumptions about the validity of the death dates are leading to inaccurate conclusions. If you have not read the evidence amassing on Mercy Badcock's profile, please take the time to look it over. I looked long and hard for a different Henry of Lebanon in that time frame. Can't find one, except his son who died and untimely death. When working on Mercy's profile we found that Henry Woodward died prior to March 1762, and his will was recorded at Windham County, Connecticut, but so far cannot find a copy of it. Maybe you can find it. I will see if I can get someone else to look this over as I am not comfortable assuming the unsourced dates resolve the matter.

Hi RM Noble and Teresa Obst,

Hope you will please reconnect Mercy Badcock as Henry Woodward's later life second wife based on the her Will's actual text now posted on her profile. Looking closely at Henry's Family Search profile, there is no actual source there to support the idea that he died in 1741, there is just an assertion of a date without any source or reason provided. Lacking any evidence, and knowing that Henry Jr. died before the writing of Mercy's Will, it seems reasonable to defer to the evidence of having been married now visible on Mercy's profile via her Will.

Henry Woodward is referred to numerous times in Mercy's Will and he actually signs the document in his own hand supporting her choice to leave her belongings to her own children. Technically at the time her possessions probably would have belonged to him, so it was quite special that he consented. This speaks well to his character. Original images are now posted on her profile (These can easily be coded to show up as images on Henry's profile as it proves he lived much longer than was assumed.)

Here is a link to her profile, please examine the evidence that an number of us have amassed (changes tab show the contributors working on her over time) . After hours of looking into this interesting family group, I would be confident reconnecting her myself. Generally I would just leap in and set it right, but since RM disconnected her, it seem a better approach for me to just respectfully request you both look the evidence over and complete the reconnection. Thank you for any time you can spare for this couple!
