Biography

Nathaniel, son of Nathaniel Woodward,^[1][2] was born at Rushden, Northamptonshire, England in mid-1609, since his parents were married in September 1608 and he was apparently baptized at Rushden by August 1609.^[3]

Nathaniel, a carpenter by trade, was part of the Great Migration, emigrating from Puddington, Bedfordshire to Massachusetts Bay in 1633, as a servant to William Coddington.^[3]

Nathaniel first settled in Boston, joining the church there on 1 Dec 1633, and was made Freeman of Boston on 17 April 1637,^[2][4] removing to Taunton MA (1648), Boston again (1655), and Taunton again (by 1664).^[1] He was a juror in Plymouth Colony Court on 20 October 1650 and 10 June 1651 in Taunton.^[5]

Nathaniel married his first wife, Mary Jackson,^[6] by about 1638 as he is recorded as having a household of 3 people in the 28 Oct 1639 land allotment at Muddy River.^[1][4] In the 1641 allotment of land, Nathaniel received 20 acres, indicating that his household had likely grown to 4 heads.^[3]

Nathaniel and Mary had the following children:^[1][3]

Nathaniel sold his dwelling house and garden in Boston to John Langdon on 16 October 1648. Earlier that same month (08 October), the Boston church granted Nathaniel Woodward and his wife, Mary, letters of recommendation to the church at Taunton. On 14 August 1653, the letters of dismissal were granted by the Boston church.^[1] Nathaniel was a proprietor of the Ancient Iron Works established at Taunton in 1653/4. Nathaniel and his family were admitted as inhabitants of Boston on 25 February 1655, giving the town a bond of 20 pounds, Thomas Harwood acting as his bondsman.^[4]

Nathaniel married his second wife, Katherine ___, by early 1665, because in a deed dated March 21, 1664/5, Nathaniel Woodward of "Tanton in the Collony of Plimouth in New-England Carpenter & Katherine his wife" deeds to William White, bricklayer of Boston, for £22 a house standing on town land, and to pay rent to the Town of Boston.^[7] Nathaniel and Katherine had one child:^[1][3]

• James, born about 1665 and married to Hannah Stacy by 1698.

On 05 June 1671, Nathaniel Woodward was sentenced by the Court to sit in the stocks during the pleasure of the Court for speaking abusive words against Mr. Shove, pastor of the church of Taunton.^[1]

Nathaniel died after 14 September 1686, when he deeded land to his son, James, but before 01 February 1694/5, when that deed was acknowledged by witnesses, indicating that the grantors were probably deceased.^[1][3][4]
