Biography

Samuel Woodworth was born 16 May 1772 in Lebanon, New London County, Connecticut.[1][2]. He married Lovina Babcock in about 1791, based on the birth of their first child in February 1792.

Samuel and his family left Connecticut sometime after 1800 when the family was shown in the census in Lebanon, Connecticut.[3] In 1804, they were in Oneida County, New York, where their son Almon was born according to his death certificate. By the 1810 census, they were living in Warren, Herkimer County, New York,[4] and by 1819 Samuel had joined his sister Mary and her husband, Ambrose Garey, in Windham, Luzerne County [later Wyoming County], Pennsylvania.[5] In the 1830 census, Samuel was in Newark, Tioga County, New York, near his sons Barzilliel and Samuel Jr.[6] He has not been found in the 1840 census, but was probably close to his son Asahel in Lisle, Broome County, New York, which was the starting point of his journey to Indiana a few years later (see his wife's profile).

The children of Samuel and Lovina were:[7]

1. Barzilliel Woodworth 1792 - 1846
2. Samuel Woodworth Jr 1796 - 1851
3. Asahel Woodworth 1798 - 1875
4. Nancy Adelia Woodworth Mitchell1802-1834
5. Almon Woodworth 1804 - 1854
6. Sally Woodworth 1807 - 1873
7. William Woodworth 1809 - 1878
8. James Woodworth 1813 - 1886

E. B. Woodworth says that Samuel died at Otsego, Steuben County, Indiana, in 1846. A memorial stone placed more than 150 years later in the cemetery at Otsego also bears this date,[8] but there is no documentary evidence to confirm the death date.

The memorial stone indicates that Samuel Woodworth was a Revolutionary War soldier, but unfortunately, it appears to be a case of mistaken identity. This Samuel Woodworth was only 11 years old when the war ended, and he is unlikely to have served so young. He was undoubtedly living with his parents in east central Connecticut, and could not have served in the 2nd New York Volunteers as indicated on the stone. His father, James, served in two Revolutionary War regiments in Connecticut from 1776 to 1778 and died near Lebanon in 1812 without ever leaving the area.[9]
