Biography

Aquilla's birthplace and home of Emanuel Ville does not seem to exist any longer. I do not know if the town name has changed or it was just so small that it fell off the map: Hamilton Township is still a place on the map. I have 3 sources for Aquilla's year of birth and I have used the one on his tombstone. The other 2 list his year of birth as 1814.

Aquilla is listed as a cooper in one of his census records.

It appears as if the original spelling of the last name was Woolbert as this is the spelling given by most of the records I found of him and his children's generation used the spelling of Wolbert more often.

There were several Woolberts living in south Jersey at the estimated time of Aquilla's birth in conjunction with many other of my family names: Scull, Barber, Bassett, Mart and Brown. Most of them were Quakers but I have not pieced together my genealogy back much farther than this. I am fairly certain Aquilla and his family would have been Friends as they are buried in the Quaker cemetery.

In both records, the last name is spelled Woolbert. However, the family name is spelled Wolbert in his great-grandson's Bible. His estimated year of birth and place of birth come from the 1850 census above. His son Charles' (Wolbert-7) wedding invitation lists him as being from May's Landing, NJ, as well, and the last name is spelled Wolbert.

His daughter, Louisa's, death listing in Family Search "NJ Deaths and Burials 1720-1988" list his name as Aquila Woolburt.
