Samuel married Elizabeth Hudson Burr, eldest daughter of Henry Burr and Elizabeth Hudson, in Chesterfield, Burlington County, New Jersey. Their marriage certificate shows that they were married at a solemn public meeting of the people called Quakers . . . (from minutes of meeting). "He Samuel Woolman taking by the hand the said Elizabth Burr did openly declare her to be his wife promising by divine assistance to be unto her a loving and faithful husband until it shall please God by death to separate." Samuel was a weaver who succeeded his father on the Rancocas farm, enlarging it and making it very prosperous.
It was noted in a biography by Josephine E. Scattergood (page 114) that "Samuel must have been remarkable for talent, intelligence and perseverance" as mentioned by Charles Stokes.
Mrs. Frances Stokes provided records from the Woolman Family Bible to the research for the book mentioned below.
