Dorothy was the daughter of watchmaker/jeweller Harry Woolsey, and Mary Jane Foster, who came from a family of butchers.
Following the death of her mother in 1909, she accompanied her father to Canada.
In 1911, she and her father lived with her sister Edith and her new husband Hugh Boyd in Saskatchewan.
She married Charles Herbert Rutherford in 1916, and had four children including daughter Audrey.
