Cuthbert was the son of Peter Word and Mary Unknown. His birth is indefinite, but it is believed he was about 2 when his mother died sometime before 1782 possibly in 1781. On 23 August 1800, Cuthbert was on the tax list in Lincoln County, Kentucky. Between the birth of a son in Kentucky on 29 January 1807 and 1812, Cuthbert relocated to Bedford County, Tennessee, where he remained. He was on the earliest tax list extant for Bedford County, the 1812 Tax List. In 1830 he was still in Bedford County. His household consisted of one unknown white male aged 15 to 20, one white male aged 50 to 60 [possibly Cuthbert], one unknown white female aged 15 to 20, one white female aged 50 to 60 [probably Jane] and one unknown white female aged 70 to 80. The female aged 70 to 80 could be Cuthbert's stepmother, Frances Elam Word, age 66 or his mother-in-law. He died c. 1835 and is "buried in the Word Cemetery on the homestead in Flat Creek, 22nd District of Bedford County. At least 4 generations of this Word family are buried there, but only 3 markers remained in 1977." Directions to this cemetery ... were given to me (Martha Word Haley) in 1980. The Word Cemetery is located on Crooked Run Road, off Center Church Road, off Amos Gamble Road and across Center Church Road. Walk through an old barn and across the hill. The cemetery is in the pasture behind the hill. Most of the markers have been stomped down and destroyed by nature and cattle.
