Biography

Mary Worden's birth is estimated to be about 1639, probably in Yarmouth, Plymouth Colony, where her parents, Peter and Mary (Unknown) Worden, resided.[1] The proof of Mary's parentage is her mother's will, dated 26 March 1686 and proved 31 May 1687: she was named as Mary Barge, along with sisters Mercy Winslow and Martha Seavernce. Mary Worden's son-in-law, John "Barg", to be executor.[2]

On 8 December 1657, John "Borg" and Mary "Wordden" were married in Sandwich, Plymouth Colony.[3][4][5] John was the son of Thomas and Dorothy Burgess, born about 1637 perhaps in Lynn, Massachusetts Bay Colony where his parents lodged, or in Sandwich, Plymouth Colony, where they removed in 1637.[6][7]

John was admitted a freeman in 1657, and served as grand juror in 1661. They removed to Yarmouth soon after and was a deputy from that town to the Court at Plymouth in 1680. His father Thomas Burges of Sandwich made his will, dated 4 Oct. 1684 and probated 2 Mar, in which he named his grandson Thomas Burgess, son of John Burgess.[8]

John died before 3 July 1701 in Yarmouth, (then) Barnstable, Province of Massachusetts Bay.[9] John Burg's will, dated 14 August 1700 and proved 3 July 1701, mentions wife Mary, his sons John, Thomas, Joseph, Samuel and Jacob, his "five daughters" unnamed except for unmarried Martha. The codicil mentions land belonging to "Aunt Martha Severance", sister of Mary (Worden) Burgess, wife of John. John's heirs were "my eldest son John Burg" who received land John Sr. purchased from John Nickerson and meadowland he purchased from William Nickerson; son Thomas Burg received land now occupied by Andrew Hopkins which "I bought of Samuel Worden Jr.? and is mine after the death of Joseph Severan's wife." Wife Mary Burg received 1/3 of house, land and movable property to be hers while she remained John's widow. daughter Martha was to live in John's house while she remained single. Upon the widow Mary's death John Sr's five daughters (not named) were to divide the movable property and balance of the land was to be divided among sons Joseph, Samuel and Jacob. The codicil instructed John Sr's sons as to the care of their mother while she remained a widow i.e. son Joseph should pay his mother one bushel of wheat yearly etc.Thomas Burg was to have three loads of hay yearly until the decease of his Aunt Martha Severans. [9]

Mary died before 11 May 1724 in Yarmouth when her son Jacob Burges was appointed administrator of the estate of Mary Burge, late of Yarmouth, deceased.[10] An inventory of her estate was taken on 16 May 1724 by Joseph Crosby, John Paddock and Ebenezer Swift, and sworn to in court on 8 July 1724 by Jacob Burg, administrator. The inventory totaled £35 and included some apparently good-quality clothing, a silk scarf & hood, the usual bedding, household goods and furniture, a cow and calf and a heifer.[11] On 10 July 1727, discharge was granted to the administrator, Jacob Burg, having made his account on the estate, having paid all legacies excepting what was due his sister Patience Nye and her heirs, and to Mercy Elles, the amount of 27 shillings.[12]

Research Notes

Daughter Mary Ellis? It has been speculated that daughter Mary might have been the Mary who was mentioned in a March 1679/80 court record as the wife of Manoah Ellis (abt.1659-bef.1703).[14] Sanborn cited the New England Historical and Genealogical Register vol. 119, p. 267, but this research indicates Brownson and McLean could not find any contemporary source to prove the maiden name of Manoah's wife.[15] A 10 July 1727 discharge from her mother's estate records a daughter named Mercy Elles instead of Mary.[12]

  5. Comment: The above marriage is recorded in Sandwich. There is no marriage recorded in the Yarmouth Vital Records. Many sources give the location as Yarmouth, and most presumably are citing Clarence Torrey's New England Marriages to 1700, where he specifies that they resided in Yarmouth, not necessarily married there. Torrey cites MD 14:167 which is a transcription of the Sandwich record above;MD 3:201, which, however, is a transcription of the will of Mary (Unknown) Worden, the mother of the subject of this profile; and "Burgess 12", which supplies only the date, not a location of Yarmouth.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:

The fifth paragraph of the current biography reads the following: "On 10 July 1727, discharge was granted to the administrator, Jacob Burg, having made his account on the estate, having paid all legacies excepting what was due his sister Patience Nye and her heirs, and to Mary Elles, the amount of 27 shillings."

An image of the probate record in question (Barnstable County Probate Records Vol. 4:377) is found here: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C9YY-L75T?cat=43935

I observe that the document does not appear to read, "Mary Elles" as transcribed above. The handwritten letter immediately after the "M" is essentially identical to the 4th letter of "Elles", or lower-case "e". Additionally, the given name appears to have 5 letters in it instead of 4. I would interpret this handwriting to read, "Mercy Elles". An alternative transcription could be "Mercy Elees". A direct comparison of how her given name was written can be made with the part that reads, "Mary Burg Late of Yarmouth".

Agreed, the name as written in the document appears to be "Mercy Elles." I've made the correction.

Thanks for the quick reply Bobbie! I can update the list of children so it's consistent with the discharge of Mary Burgess' estate.

I would like to do a bit of a re-write of this profile, as long as the other PMs don't mind. The bulk of the current bio is a cut & paste from The Worden Family Genealogy website, and, unfortunately, didn't bring in the sources cited there. Any disagreements?
