WORDEN Dies; Former Road Commissioner Perry W. Worden, 71, retired highway commissioner of Portage County, died Wednesday afternoon at his home on Lake Thomas in the Town of Stockton.
He had been in ill health for three years.
Mr. Worden was highway commissioner from 1940 to 1963.
In this post he supervised the operations of the county Highway Department.
His death was announced late Wednesday afternoon near the close of the Portage County Board's spring reorganization session, and members observed a minute of silence in his memory.
Mr. Worden was born April 30, 1893, and grew up in Amherst, where he attended school. His parents were the late Mr. and Mrs. George Worden.
He was a brick mason, operated a butcher shop and then was a potato buyer for Okray Produce for 17 years. He lived in Amherst during this time, coming to Stevens Point when he was named highway commissioner.
In 1962, he moved to Lake Thomas.
Mr. Worden was married Aug. 30, 1914, at Amherst to the former Zoa Durkee.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters. Mrs. Carol (Alfred) Gilbertson, Hollandale, and Mrs. James (Sandra) Selby, Route 3, Stevens Point; a son, Kenneth Worden, Amherst; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Ellen Childs, Gilroy, Calif., and Mrs. Ralph Lea, Amherst.
A daughter, Mrs. Philip (Marie) Shaw, and three sisters preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Boston Funeral Home, with the Rev. Perry H. Saito of St Paul's Methodist Church officiating.
Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Amherst Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Friday. A memorial fund has been established in Mr. Worden's name.
