Biography

Dr. Thomas Worden, son of Samuel Worden and Hopestill Holley, was born about 1675 in Yarmouth, Massachusetts[1] (in 1720, he testified that he was about aged 45).

Thomas was married to Sarah Butler on 9 September 1708 in Stonington, Connecticut by Ephraim Minor (alternate date 9 December 1708). Sarah was the daughter of Daniel Butler and Margaret _____.[1] They had the following children:

  1. Abigail, born 27 October 1709, died 13 November 1741; married Jeremiah Main and had issue[1]
  2. Bathsheba, born 27 October 1709, died 26 September 1788[1]
  3. Elizabeth, baptized 3 June 1711, likely died young[1]
  4. Sarah, born 3 December 1713; married Samuel Crandall and had issue[1]
  5. Thomas II, born 5 July 1718, died before 1762; married Rebeckah Hartshorn and had issue[1]
  6. Jane, born 3 August 1722, died 21 June 1812; married John Beckwith and had children[1]

And possibly (unproven):

  • Dr. Valentine, born ca. 1700, he is possibly the son of Thomas or Isaac, married Deborah Letting 1726 in NY and had issue[1]
  • Content, born ca. 1726, died 15 June 1749, married Elijah Ayers 1746[1]

In 1712, Thomas bought land in Stonington, Connecticut, adjacent to his father, from Samuel Allen. In 1714, his father gave 20 acres in Stonington to Thomas.[1]

Groton, August 16th, 1720: "Robert Stanton Stanton-74, aged sixty-seven years, William Bennit, aged sixty-one years, Mathew Randal, aged forty-nine years, Doctor Thomas Wardin, aged forty-five years, who have hereunto each of them subscribed their names, testify that they well know the river, commonly called and famously known by the name Pawcatuck, and it goes on..."[2]

"Dr. Thomas Worden should certainly be noticed as among the early physicians at West Farms [now Franklin, CT]. He was a son of Samuel Worden, read medicine with Dr. Hartshorne, and resided upon the hillside a short distance south-west from the village of Baltic. Although his advantages were slender and his location obscure, and although his death occurred more than a century ago, (1759) yet his name has been handed down to our own time in connection with a prescription which he originally used in practice. Dec. 17, 1728, the town voted Dr. Thomas Worden 'for travel and Medisons applied to Ebenezer Hunter's child, 3 [shillings?]'"[3]

Thomas died 6 November 1759 in Norwich, Connecticut.[1][4] His wife died there on 6 May 1760.[1]

Thomas left a will dated 4 September 1759 and proved 6 December 1759.[5] His heirs included:[1][6]

  • wife, Sarah
  • daughter, Sarah
  • son, Thomas
  • son-in-law, Samuel Crandall
  • daughter, Jane Beckwith and son-in-law John Beckwith
  • son-in-law Silas Armstrong and daughter Bathsheba Armstrong

His inventory was completed on 8 December 1759 in Norwich.[6]

I expanded and re-wrote a lot of this bio today. I checked all the citations and added many new ones from the Worden Family Association (WFA), which is considered very reliable, Unfortunately, WFA is available by subsription only. Eventually, I will add the citations used by WFA to this bio (this requires more time than I have at the moment). In the meantime, if you have any questions about WFA citations, please shoot me an email. Thanks, Traci

Worden-4734 and Worden-94 appear to represent the same person because: wife name, daughter name and birth date are very close
