This profile is part of the Wormuth Name Study.

BRICK WALL

Peter was born about 1788 and, according to the 1855 New York State Census, he was born in Montgomery County, New York. [1] (The transcription of the surname in this record is incorrect and the handwriting on the census is poor but this is Peter Wormuth and his family)

He was married at least twice, if not more. Family lore is that his first wife was Harriet Barecolt but there are questions about her maiden name. The death certificate of his son, Joseph Wormuth, says his mother, Peter's wife, was Harriet Barecolt, however, no other reference to her or documentation has been found, yet. Four sons were born to Harriet: Joseph, John, Stephen and Peter, Jr.

Peter married widow Grace Deighton Ramsey August 19, 1849.[2]. The clipping indicates that Peter was from Callicoon and Grace, widow of James Ramsey, was from Bethel. Peter and Grace appear to have had four children: Elizabeth, James Henry, Mary and Richard.

Peter was well-known in the area where he lived and even appeared in Quinlan's History of Sullivan County. [3] : "William E. Wood was then an occupant of the Wormuth place. The latter is on a ridge between Buck brook and the north branch of the Callicoon. Soon after 1831, Peter Wormuth bought out Wood. Wormuth was not social or genial even in his family circle; but was noted for industry and rigid economy. In the end he became a "man of means" - owned a good farm, and was a lender of money."

Peter passed away in 1862, according to his headstone. [citation needed] [4]

Research Notes

There are four Peter Wormuths in the Wormuth Name Study. [11]

There are several references to a Peter Wormuth but more research is necessary to sort out dates and geographic locations.

This Wormuth family branch was mostly in Sullivan County, NY. There was a Wormuth family in the historic Mohawk valley of New York but, again, more research is needed.

There are multiple spellings of the surname: Warmuth, Wermuth, Wormuth, Warmouth, Wermouth, Wormouth. In addition, there appears to be a connection with the name Wormwood.

However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Peter:
