Biography

Alfred Worsell was born in Kent, England.

Alfred was born 21 Nov 1879 at Beckenham, Kent. He is the son of John Worsell and Jesse Canning. He was the second eldest of 9 children.

In the 1881 England Census, Alfred was 4 months old, living at 129 Alexandra Cottages, Bromley. His father was working as a plumber. ^[1]

As a 10-year-old, Alfred appeared in the 1891 England Census with his family, and they were living at 36 Parish Lane, Beckenham. He was one of John and Jessie's 6 children. John continued to work as a plumber.^[2]

Alfred joined the Royal Navy on 31 March 1897 as a plumber. He was 18 years old. His first ship was the Northampton.^[3]

Alfred was described as 5ft 5in, with brown hair, grey eyes, and a fair complexion. He had the following marks: 2 dots on the left forearm, 1 dot on the middle finger of the left hand, a flower on his right forearm and a sword on his left forearm.^[3]

He died 3 years later in the Royal Navy Hospital, Malta from typhoid fever. The last ship he served on was HMS Renown.^[3][4].
