Biography

CHARLES R. and TEDA V. (WORSHAM) McMANUS of SAN AUGUSTINE and REAL COS., TX

Charles Richmond McMANUS (28 June 1887 Angelina Co., TX – 16 Dec 1966 Uvalde Co., TX) has been enumerated in at least four TX counties: Angelina, Nacogdoches, Shelby and San Augustine, although some county lines may have moved rather than the family. He was working for pay with the railroad as a water boy by age thirteen.

On 16 Feb 1908 in San Augustine, Elder W. H. Eaves performed the marriage of Charles to Teda Viola “Teddie” WORSHAM (08 Aug 1893 Shelby Co., TX – 27 Sep 1959 Real Co., TX). He was a general farmer in San Augustine County shown on Farm Schedule #276 and 15 in the 1910 and 1920 censuses.

They had three children as evidenced by delayed birth records in 1942 Shelby Co., TX sworn to by T. P. WORSHAM of Neuville before A.M. ALFORD of Shelby Co. The record stated the mother lived in “Lathrop” and that she had two children, two living.

Sometime between 1920 and April of 1930 Charles moved his family and his father to an area on the border of Uvalde and Real Counties, TX. Having been raised in the outdoor atmosphere of timber country, Real County, divided by the Neuces River from Edwards County, may have been chosen for its appeal to hunters and fishermen. Precinct 3, District 3, the area where he lived, was next to Camp Wood which was unincorporated at the time. He was a stock farmer on Farm #57, which he rented. He also owned a radio.

Charles went to California in the late 1930s, perhaps after his father’s death, and obtained social security number 550-22-2815. He and Teda returned to TX but their sons either stayed in or returned to CA. His occupation on the death record shows Rancher-Carpenter-Ranching-Building and it names his parents as Rich Maron McManus and Nellie Pool. McManus history of this line show variants Rich and Richard are in actuality, ‘Richmond’ and the middle name ‘Maron’ is likely meant for Marion, a common historical name after Francis Marion, The Swamp Fox of the Revolution.

Their final home was Barksdale, Edwards Co., on the west side of Neuces River. Charlie, Teda and his father Richmond are all buried at Vance Cemetery in the community of Vance about 8 miles north of Barksdale on the Real County side. [ Find A Grave: Memorial #12919584 ]

Ch for Charles and Teda incl:

  1. Alvin H McManus (08 Apr 1909 Shelby Co., TX – 08 Jan 1990 Los Banos, Merced Co., CA). His name has been variously spelled as Alvan and Hobson, Happson, and Hopson but his son, Alvin Happson, Jr. is also shown with this spelling on his birth certificate. The origin of this nickname is discussed in the profile for Richmond and Mary S. (Pool) McManus, his grandparents. In 1930, he was single in Real Co., TX and was a clerk in a drug store. Later, with his parents, he was introduced to the green and golden state of California and decided to stay. There are San Francisco records indicating Al and brother “Mac” belonged to the Teamsters Union sometime during the latter years of the Great Depression. Their presence is supported by that documentation and a colorful verbal tradition is recalled: "And there is still this story about a family [Alvin, Sr.] started in the late 1930’s out here in California that I haven’t had the time to chase down and this real estate agent in Turlock that looks a lot like [him].” Such is the intriguing part of family history research. The 1940 census seems to confirm this tradition.

Before 1950, Alvin married Thelma VAN CLEVE (12 Sep 1913 TX - 12 Feb 1994 Morgan Hill, Santa Clara Co., CA). Her mother may have been a LIGHT. They came from Brazoria, TX in 1959 to live in Morgan Hill, CA and in 1967 moved to San Martin, CA at 55 S. St. San Martin, CA where they stayed for 31 years. Al was a construction inspector for 42 years. Alvin and Thelma had 2 stillborn children before 1951 followed by two sons, to incl:

1.1 Alvin Happson, Jr. “Al” (1951 Uvalde, TX – living 2009 CA) who md Maureen Ann DOOLEY on 7 Jul 1973 in the mission church in Santa Clara, CA. They lived in the same San Martin family home he inherited when his mother passed away. Al and Maureen had at least one son, Sean Michael (1981).

1.2 Donald Merritt (1953 Uvalde, TX – living 2009 in UT), the middle name in honor of his mother’s obstetrician. He may be the keeper of some old family records left by his mother. Numerous MERRITTs are buried at Vance Cem. On 8 Jan 1959 in Gilroy, CA he md Julie HOTFELTER and they had a dau Melissa Ann (1980) before divorcing in 1994. Melissa eventually moved to UT, as did Donald, to be near her and the grandchildren. In January 2003 Melissa had two children, a boy 13 months old and a daughter 28 months old.

Alvin, Sr. had a cardiac episode while doing what he loved best – fishing at Los Banos. He was taken to Los Banos Community hospital where he died. He is buried at Gavilan Hills Memorial Park in Gilroy, CA. Thelma died in Morgan Hill, CA and is buried alongside her husband.

  1. Marion Richmond McManus “Mac” (06 Jan 1912 TX - 29 Jan 1983 Oakdale, Stanislaus Co., CA). Soon after coming to CA with his parents, he joined the Carpenters and Teamsters Union in the Bay area with his brother Alvin. He was a veteran of the US Navy in WWII and had lived in the Oakdale, CA area eight years.

At some time he lived in Santa Cruz and may have md a McINTYRE girl, or this may have been a common law marriage. Currently the most information known is from the obituary in the Modesto Bee. He had three known children but according to family tradition, some of whom may not have kept the McMANUS surname.

Marion’s chn. appear to be but needing confirmation are:

2.1 Michael McINTYRE of Aptos, CA in 1983 2.2 Rich McMANUS of San Jose, CA in 1983 2.3 Lisa MARTONE of Santa Cruz, CA in 1983, this is believed to be a married name.

At some point he became a laborer for Harry L. Murphy, floor covering. Marion died of prostate cancer after a long illness at Riverbluff Convalescent in Riverbank. He is buried at Oakdale Memorial Cemetery in Oakdale, CA.

Estrangement existed between Marion and his brother and contact between them discontinued in the 1960s.

  1. Nellie Frances McManus (04 Jul 1914 TX - Vance Cem., Real Co., TX) md Arbie Curtis “Buster” PANNELL (06 Dec 1912 – 16 Dec 1971 Real Co., TX) s/o Edgar Dock and Minnie Lucretia GREER according to the cemetery survey. They lived and died in Real Co., TX. Nellie was the informant for her father’s death record and gave his mother’s maiden name as Nell POOL. This was the first indication that POOL was a matrilineal surname. Nell and Buster are buried at the Vance Cemetery with a double marker. Nellie has “nee McManus” on her marker but no date of death. They had at least one dau, Judy, who is recalled as being in the music business in Nashville, TN. There was probably a son as well.
