Herbert Oliver (Bert) Worth is born on July 25, 1897, in Coolongolook, New South Wales, Australia [1][2]. His parents are John Worth (1851-1922) and Harriet Loveday Priestley (1859-1952).
In 1918 he marries Elsie Mary Jane Fenning (1897-1985). His older brother, Archi, had married Elsie’s sister in about 1913. Bert and Elsie have at least five children:
• Lila Elvena Worth 1919-2009 + (1944) George Maskey 1921-2000
• Coralyn Elsie Worth 1920- 1979 + Frederick James Morgan 1924-2003
• Vernon Oliver Worth 1922-2009 + (1963) Rosemary Elsie Spear
• Iris Jean Worth 1926-1984
• Cedric Edgar Worth 1928-? + (1964) Margaret Elizabeth Sper
There is a possibility that there were more children than the five listed above but, to date, only records for these five have been found and even then, there might be some question about whether or not we are attaching these children to the correct parents.
In 1942 Bert enlists as a private in the Australian Army [3]. We have no information on how long he servces or what he does.
From the 1947 annoucement of the funeral of his brother, we know Herbert is living in Wootton. And, again, in 1952, the obituary for his mother lists Herbert as living in Wootton . Wootton is just north of Myall Lake (the Pacific Highway passes by Wootton) and it is just south of Coolongolook where Herbert was born. Herbert’s parents had lived in Wootton and several siblings lived there in the 1940s and 1950s. In fact, It is understood that the Worth family was the first European family to settle in Wootton [4].
Bert dies on August 16, 1968, and he is buried in the Sandgate Cemetery in Newcastle [5]. Elsie dies in 1985 and is buried with him.
