Research Notes

Initially the maiden name of Hannah who md John HOUGH of Cheshire Co., England. had been Dr. Granville HOUGH speculated that Hannah's father may have been Francis Rossell and has been used until a recently uncovered marriage record appeared for John Hough to a Hannah Worthington as a dau of Isaacke Worthington of The Hough, Macclesfield Hundred, Cheshire, England. The strongest proof is that a 1682 couple of the same place and dates with a child born1682 is recorded in Cheshire Co., England records and fit well.

Biography

Evaluation of evidence:

John HOUGH facts: Came to Bucks Co., PA from Wilmslow, Cheshire, England with his wife Hannah and a son, John, about two years old in Sept. 1683.

Hannah WORTHINGTON Facts: At Saint Bartholomew's Church, Cheshire, England, on 19 October 1680 was married John Hough to Hannah Worthington of "the Hough" hamlet of Wilmslow Parish, Cheshire Co., England. Her husband is now considered the same John Hough of Middletown, Bucks, who died in January 1732.

Francis ROSSELL Facts: Francis came to Bucks County with Richard HOUGH as an indentured servant in 1683, the same year as John Hough. His dau, Joan/Jane came with him md (1) Michael HUFF and (2) Thomas BROCK. Francis ROSSELL bequeathed to Joan Brock and "her HUFF children" by Michael Hough and also bequeathed land to the unnamed children of John and Hannah HOUGH. The Land bequest was finalized in 1712 to the Hough children - but these records are said to have been destroyed by natural events:

  • The record of the Board of Property to which the HOUGH children had to bring their case reportedly agreed that the land had been surveyed for ROSSELL and that his executor, Samuel Carpenter had given the children a deed for the property; yet ~ they found no proof that a grant or warrant had ever been issued or that payment had been made the Proprietor. [Pennsylvania Archives, Second Series, Vol. 19, Pp 527-528]. However, the Board accepted the case but required the children to pay the interest [?capital gains] which amounted to 60£. The Thomas JANNEY profile in the Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography explains that "the first Books of Deeds in the Pennsylvania Record Office were damaged before copies were made and records of many early patents are utterly obliterated." Additionally, "Falls MM records 1683-1687 were lost and some missing from 1694.

The facts evidence a familial link of the wife of John Hough of Middletown, to Hannah Worthington but there is also evidence there was some familial link with the Rossell family.
