Walter was born on 9 April 1867 in Masbrough, Yorkshire, England. He was the son of George Wortley and Frances (Lound) Wortley.^[1][2]

When Walter was 21 he married Harriet Naylor on 20 May 1888 in Rotherham, Yorkshire, England. The couple had 5 children: Walter Wortley, Edward Thomas Wortley, Leonard Naylor Wortley, Sydney Wortley and Stuart Wortley.^[4][5]
