John Wray, son of Sir John Wray and his wife, Grizell Bethell, was baptised at Glentworth in Lincolnshire 21 September 1619. [1] [2] He was educated at Magdalene College, Cambridge, graduating MA in 1636. [3]
A Captain of Horse in the Parliamentary forces during the English Civil War, John was captured at Newark in 1645. [1]
He married Elizabeth Willoughby, widow of Sir Simonds d'Ewes, and daughter of Sir Henry Willoughby Bt. and his wife, Frances Darcy at Wilne in Derbyshire on 23 Jan 1652/3. [4] Cokayne names her mother as Lettice, daughter of Sir Francis Darcy.[1]
In 1654 he was returned to Parliament as Member for Lincolnshire. [1]
Before her death in 1655 Elizabeth bore John a child who followed the mother to the grave within a few months. Elizabeth was buried at Glentworth on the 3rd of November.[1] Barely two months later John's father, Sir John, also died, being buried on 31 December 1655 and young John inherited the Baronetcy. [5]
John's second wife was Sarah Evelyn, daughter of Sir John Evelyn and his wife, Elizabeth Coxe. Sarah bore him a daughter, Elizabeth, who was baptised at Glentworth 27 February 1663. [1]
John died without a male heir in 1664 and was buried at Glentworth on the 29th of October. He was succeeded in the Baronetcy by his brother, Christopher. [1]
