Kenneth was born in 1939. He was the son of Kenneth Wrenn and Mildred Goddin. He passed away in 2009. Kenneth Frederick "Fred" Wrenn Jr., 70, passed away on June 8, 2009, at home, with his loving family and friends by his side, after a courageous three-year battle with cancer.
Mr. Wrenn, a lifelong resident of Charleston, was born on March 5, 1939, to Kenneth F. Wrenn Sr. and Mildred Wrenn. He graduated from Charleston High School and went on to receive a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering Degree from the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1962.
He spent 50 years in the natural gas industry, which included a 39-year career with Columbia Gas Transmission Corporation. Mr. Wrenn began working for United Fuel Gas Company in Charleston in 1959 as a co-op engineer and remained with United Fuel and its successor, Columbia Gas, until retirement in 1998. Career positions included chief design engineer of compressor stations, manager of compressor applications, director of operations engineering, project director, vice president of engineering, vice president of engineering and construction and vice president of field services. He was highly regarded within the natural gas transmission industry for expertise in gas compression applications, design, construction, operations and maintenance. After retirement, he operated his own consulting firm, Wrentech Services LLC.
Mr. Wrenn was a registered professional engineer in West Virginia, Ohio and New Jersey and a life member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He was co-founder and member of the Gas/Electric Partnership of the Electric Power Institute, as well as a past member of the Executive Committee and Research Planning Task Group of the Pipeline Research Council International; Program Advisory Committee of the Gas Research Institute; Environment, Safety and Operations Committee of the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America; and Gas Machinery Research Committee of the Southern Gas Association.
Mr. Wrenn was a charter member of Village Chapel Presbyterian and an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Charleston, having served as an elder and on the Worship and Property Division committees.
Mr. Wrenn is survived by his wife of 46 years, Aileen Wrenn; his daughters, Diane Wrenn Holcomb, Marilyn Wrenn and Leslie Wrenn Drake; and his sons-in-law Tod Holcomb, Todd Harrell and Scot Drake, all of Charleston. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Emily Wrenn Harrell, Jonathan Frederick Harrell and Gabrielle Drake.
He enjoyed NASCAR, traveling, and spending time with his family and special friends, including Brenda and C.E. Drake and Don Gartman, all of Charleston.
Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 12, at Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston, with the Rev. John Fagg of Houston, Texas, and the Rev. Dr. Bill McCoy officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, South Charleston.
