I am uncertain about his first name. For a long time it was given as James. Then William James and James William.

The census records indicate he could have been born between 1818 and 1821 in Person county, North Carolina. James Wren, age 50, M, W, born in North Carolina. Age 50 would make his birth year 1819 to 1820.[1][2] Gives birth year as 1820
He died after 1880 because he was enumerated in the 1880 census in North Carolina.[3]

KNOW ALL MEN BY THESE PRESENTS, That we, James Wrenn and George Loman are held firmly bound unto the state of North Carolina in the full sum of FIVE HUNDRED POUNDS. current money, to be paid to the said State of North Carolina; for the payment of which, well and truly to be made and done, we bind ourselves, our heirs, executors and administrators, jointly and soverally and firmly by these presents. Sealed with our seals, and dated 24th (?) day of February A.D. 1841. THE CONDITION OF THE ABOVE OBLIGATION IS SUCH, that the above bounden James Wrenn hath made application for a license for Marriage, to be celebrated between him and Polly Jackson of the county aforesaid; now in case it shall not hereafter appear that there is any lawful cause or impediment to obstruct said Marriage, then the above Obligation to void, otherwise to remain in full force and virtue.
