Lydia Jane Wright is estimated to have been born about 1778 by the year she married. She was the daughter of William Wright named "Jean Champ" in his will dated the 7th of October in 1802.[1]
"Jane" married to Quisenberry Champ in Bourbon County, Kentucky on the 16th of September in 1799 per the minister's return of marriages.[2] The bond for their marriage was entered into by Quisenberry Wright and the bride's brother, Hugh Wright, on the 7th of August. This record indicated her proper name was Lydia. The document was signed "Berry" Champ and Hugh Wright.[3] Her brother Hugh Wright also attested to her being 21 years of age, thereby requiring no parental consent.[4]
Jane Champ appears to have been listed as head-of-household during the 1810 census, residing in Bourbon County with two young daughters. She was then a young widow.[5] During the census of 1850, a 75 year old Jane Champ appeared in the Fayette County, Indiana household of William Leer. Jane appears to have been residing with this son of her sister Elizabeth and David Leer in the 1830 & 1840 census. He had married in 1820 to her daughter, Patsy (Champ) Smith, who had first married to Middleton Smith in 1818.[6][7][8]
