Biography

Marriage Husband Philbert Wright. Wife @I9994@. Child: @I9686@. 1712[1][2]

The first record of Philbert Wright is 16 May 1709 when he is mentioned in the estate of Matthew Mockbee. In Prince George County, Maryland. [Inventories, Washington Library, in Macon, Georgia].

"One Phil Wright (among others) was transported by Walter Grainger for 2000 acres of land on the Rappa [Rappahannock] River 4 Miles above Nanzimum [later Nansamond County; now Norfolk Virginia area] Town 26 Sept 1663. This land was originally granted to Robert Purfoy 13 Mar 1655 then assigned to Thomas and Robert Elliott, sons of Anth Elliott and renewed in their name 25 Nov 1658, then deserted by them and granted to said Grainger."

Philburd Wright and Richard Duckett witnessed a deed on 25 May 1720 from Thomas Holand of Prince George County to John Mobberly Jr. of Prince George County for 100 acres on William and Mary's "Chance" in Anne Arundel County.

5 July 1720- Thomas Holland of Prince George County, Gentleman, to Philbert Wright, Planter, a tract of land called "Neal's Delight" containing one hundred acres of land. Signed Thomas Holland (Anne Arundel County Land Records 1719-1722 Microfilm CR39,510-1)

William Parson(Persons) of Anne Arundel County used a mare he had of Philbart Wright as collateral for a loan 13 May 1731 (Anne Arundel County Land Records 1730-1733 Microfilm CR39 511-3)

The Case for Philbert Right and Ester Becraft as Possible Parents Various , Maryland

Documentation of known children of Philbert and Esther Wright: Ann - born 11 Oct 1713 in St. Barnabas Church in Queen Ann Parish, Pr. Georges ., MD; Peter- born 31 Mar 1717; Philbert-born 4 Sep 1719; Rebecca- born 1722. Philbert and Esther had at least seven children, including Richard Wright, Sr.

1738 June: "George Becraft undertakes for Hester Wright," at the Anne Arundel County Court. 9 [George Becraft was Hester's (Ester's) brother.] This would seem to indicate that Esther Becraft Wright's husband, Philbert, was deceased by this date.

Likely parents of Richard Wright, Sr. - Information cited is based upon the legal principle of preponderance of the evidence - meaning that if definitive proof documents could not be located, and if all evidence pointed in the right direction, then a lineage or relationship was accepted as true. In this case, the DNA from Richard, Sr. to Philbert Wright 1719 [d.o.b.] to Joshua Wright was used to make the link back to #1 Philbert Wright and Esther Becraft.

From Jeff Wright, Wright DNA Project - "The best theory is that he was 1738 [d.o.d.] Philbert Wright -- this is based on circumstantial evidence of time and place. The same results could occur if some or all of these lines descend from a brother, uncle, or father of 1738 Philbert.

But, given no evidence has been found to put forth an alternative theory, then the remaining LIKELY ANCESTOR was Philbert. This is PROOF "within reasonable certainty", NOT proof 'beyond all doubt"........ I have updated my diagram of this family which can be found at: http://www.wright-dna.org/trees/1784RichardWright201008.pdf.

Until the time comes that other evidence alters this theory, it's the best working theory we have."

Philbert is mentioned in the following records:

  • 16 May 1709, Maryland, mentioned in the estate of Matthew Mockabee.
  • 3 December 1712, Church record, married Esther Becraft, Queen Anne’s Parish, Prince Georges, Maryland.
  • Church baptismal and death records, Maryland, children of Philbert and Esther Wright: Anne, 1713; Peter, 1717-1767; Philbert, Jr., 1719-1791; and Rebecca, 1722. (Other children not found in the church record are Richard, b. abt. 1726, and confirmed by DNA; and Joseph, b. abt. 1730).
  • 5 July 1720, Philbert acquired “Neal’s Delight.”
  • 12 May 1731, he provided collateral, in the form of a mare, for a loan for William Parsons of Anne Arundel, Maryland. [3] [4]

NEIL’SDELIGHT was a large tract of land owned by Neil Clark, Jr. It was located in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, on the north side of the Patuxent River, above Patuxent Falls. Neal Clark was born about 1664 in Anne Arundel, the son of Neal and Rachel (Beard) Clark/Clarke. In 1705, Neal, Jr. sold a part of Neal’s Delight to John Mobberly, Sr. [5]

Neal’s Delight was once at least 1050 acres before it was slowly sold off, but the old name endured.

Thomas Holland, gentleman, of Prince Georges county, Maryland, had acquired some of Neal’s Delight. Holland sold a 100 acre tract of Neal’s Delight on 5 July 1720 to Philbert Wright, planter. [6]
